Hiragana are the most common type of Kana, used to write words, show the reading of Kanji, express inflection, and in function words. Hiragana are characterized by their smooth and curvy lines.
Katakana are most commonly used to write foreign words that did not previously exist in the Japanese language. Katakana are characterized by their straight and simple lines.
